A Bitlifter is designed to help stabilize the bit while distributing pressure more evenly between the horse’s mouth and nosal bone.
Instead of creating concentrated pressure on the tongue and bars, the Bitlifter allows part of the rein pressure to be shared with the nosal bone. This can create a softer and more comfortable feeling for the horse, while encouraging a steadier and more consistent contact.
Many equine dentists here in Sweden recommend bit lifters for horses with old bit-related injuries, or for horses that try to relieve pressure on the tongue and bars by chewing on the bit or grabbing it with their teeth.
Of course, riding bitless is often an excellent option when these issues occur. However, if a bitless setup is not suitable for some reason, bit lifters can be a very effective solution.
A Bitlifter should not lift the bit when the reins are loose. It should only engage when rein pressure is applied.
